RIO GRANDE  (1950)

Directed by Richard Ford; screenplay by James Kevin McGuiness from a story by James Warner Bellah.   Starring John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara & Ben Johnson.

John Ford directs the Duke in the third installment of the “cavalry” series where JW and the boys save the day yet again.  (Fort Apache & She Wore A Yellow Ribbon being the first two.)  Although She Wore A Yellow is my favorite of the three, Rio Grande has something the other two films don’t have — a UFO zipping back in forth behind the Duke’s head in the background.  It pops into view right around the 1:14:05 mark and zips back and forth for a bit.   — The story goes that neither Ford, nor his DP Bert Glenndon saw it while filming, but there it was captured on film for all the world to see.  Is it a UFO?  Who cares, it’s a great Hollywood legend/story, and that’s all that really matters.

Wish I had a clip to show you, but it looks like you’re going to have to rent, buy, steal, or borrow a copy on your own.  Sorry ’bout that.
